Watching a solar eclipse with your students can be a great way to immerse your students in real life. But some safety has to be considered when doing this with your students. Students should not look directly at the sun unless they have approved eclipse glasses.
But those eclipse glasses are very easy to quickly take off and with so many students you may want to take a little extra protection against those peeking eyes.
Materials:
- plain white paper plates
- solar eclipse safety glasses (ISO 12312-2 international safety standard according to NASA here)
- marker or pencil
- scissors (an exacto knife may be helpful too)
Step by Step Directions:
- Lay your eclipse glasses onto the paper plate where you want them to sit.
- Use a marker or pencil to mark the cut points.
3. Cut eye holes out of the plate. Remember you marked the top and bottom of the glasses so you don’t have to go all the way to those drawn lines.
4. Add the slits for the arms of the safety glasses.
5. Slide the safety glasses on and cut out the bottom for the nose and to breathe. It’s important to try them on at this point to make sure everything is lined up correctly.
6. Color the plate. The paper plates make the perfect model of the moon passing in front of the sun. You will have to decide if you want the glasses on or off for this. If you take them off you will have to slide them on for the students when it is time.
7. Slide the safety glasses on when it is time.
8. View the solar eclipse with less worry of eyes peeking out of those safety glasses (and look super cute too).
